A STUDY ON THE FERTILITY REGULATION AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ELIGIBLE WOMEN IN KOREAN-AMERICAN

Abstract
The objective of this study is to figure out the status of family planning, reproductive health and general characteristics associated with demography and to assess the potential need of providing family planning and reproductive health services for Korean-American in Los Angeles. We collected all the data for the cases attending Family Planning Clinic of Koyro Health Foundation in L.A. providing family planning services, comprehensive prenatal services and family life education. There were 737 cases in which met the eligibility requirement for -the study.
In age distribution of women visitor at Family Planning Clinic for contraceptive services, it ranges from below the age 24 to over.45, and the women in the age 30-34 constituted the largest proportion or 35.7 percent. The mean age of women was 33.5--3.9.
In the level of educational attainment _of the women, 2.3 percent of the women graduated the primary and middle school, 21.4 percent of the women completed the high school, and the largest proportion (76.3 percent) of the women was occupied by those with junior college and university. The mean year of educational attainment in the women was 14.8

In the age distribution of age at marriage in women, 98.2 percent of the,, women was married age at 20-29years, and the mean age at marriage of the women was 24.6=2.6.
The contraceptive practice rate of the married women was 84.5 percent and ¢¥15.5 percent of the women were nonuser at the points of visiting to the clinic but received contraceptive services. The highest proportion by contraceptive methods was condoms (47.6 percent, and 14.0 percent in oral pills and 7.2 percent in spermicides.
The mean duration of contraceptive use was 3.32 years. The number of total child birth in the women was 1.38(son: 0.67, daughter: 0.71)_ The induced abortion experience rate of the women was 62.8 percent, and an average number of pregnancy was 2.74, and 1.38 in induced abortion and 0.07 in spontaneous abortion. The level of pregnancy wastage was 49.5 per 100 pregnancies in the women.
